Thanks Kate. It's such an overwhelming issue to think about, so I appreciate your thinking out loud. I just thought that I would chime in with a small pitch for one of my favorite organizations, Heifer International. The work that Heifer does is long-term, sustainable development, helping to put in place just the kinds of systems that you mentioned. Plus, they're already in Haiti (have been for years, and they're all safe after the earthquake!). www.heifer.org. :)

Thank you, Carolyn! That article is so heart-warming. I love the phrase: "No one can do everything, but everyone can do something."

And just in general I want to reiterate that even if someone does not have money to give, I think it is "doing something" to have compassion for what is happening, to notice, to talk about these things, to voice what they'd like to see happening. That is an action! ;-)

Yay!

I have been thinking today a lot about the power of the social media--like in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, I've read that the media reporters who were first dispatched down there got to New Orleans and even though they were being pressured by the Bush administration to put a positive spin on government efforts, it wasn't happening, and this was the first time that we started to see more negative reports of Bush administration policies.

So what if there were these massive Twitter or FB post movements that are a call to action for everyone, to government to stop ignoring countries that are in economic turmoil. Social media is emerging as a more and more and more powerful force that can be used for good.

That's just what I'm toying with at this moment...

Wow, what a post! Short of voting and being informed, I'm not really sure what I can feasibly do to have a real impact the infrastructure of the US, let alone a seperate country like Haiti. It is a very big and complicated problem and I could easily become discouraged trying to come up with a solution myself. It is also very frustrating to me when I think about all the people in the world who are suffering mainly as a result of different governments mismanaging their resources and/or being corrupt (the US included). Perhaps what we need are more or better leaders in our society, who have the big picture in mind and who can effectively mobilize people to action.

I personally have always struggled with giving for fear of not having enough for myself and my own family. For the past few months, I have been trying to let go of that and not stifle the urge to be generous when I feel it. It's strange, but since I have made this shift, I find myself wanting to be a lot more generous with my time and money and feeling less fearful as well.

I think there is a lot to think about. I'm with you. There were floods in the uk last year and in no way were they as devastating as for people for example in Bangladesh (and probably caused by people in the uk anyway as flooding is increasing due to global warming). We need to invest in long term solutions not just short term ones. I think the Tusnami made a big difference into haw ad is organised though as the ad respose to it was throughly analysed (I know this becuase a friend of mine proof read the report).
